Supreme Court issues interim stay on investigation against NTK chief coordinator Seeman in 'rape' case, pending closure of allegations.
The Supreme Court on Monday (March 3, 2025) issued an interim stay on the investigation against Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) chief coordinator S. Seeman in the ‘rape’ case registered against him on the basis of a complaint lodged by an actor.
The Bench headed by Justice B.V. Nagarathna and also comprising Justice S.C. Sharma, issued notice to Tamil Nadu government and the complainant, on an appeal filed by Seeman against Madras High Court’s refusal to quash the ‘rape’ case
Justice Nagarathna was informed by senior advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan that the woman complainant has already withdrawn the case, yet the High Court had ordered the investigation. He said that the complaint dates back to 2011 and the allegation was that the duo was in a “relationship”. The police had woken up after 12 years to embark on a political witch-hunt against Mr. Seeman, he added.
Justice Nagarathna remarked the allegations must have closure. To the court’s query whether any compensation to the woman was under consideration, Mr. Seeman’s lawyers said it was being considered informally. The apex court listed the case on May 2.
Earlier on February 17, the Madras High Court dismissed the petition filed by Seeman in 2023 to quash the ‘rape’ case and ordered it to be completed in 12 weeks.
Following the order, on February 27, Chennai police pasted summons on the gate of Seeman’s house. Since the summons were torn by an aide, police arrested a security guard and an aide from Mr. Seeman’s house besides seizing a pistol from the guard.
