Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Monday announced that a SIPCOT industrial park will be established in Thennadar in the district to boost employment opportunities, particularly for youth and women in Vedaranyam and Thalainayar.
The park will be developed over 450 acres of government poramboke land at a cost of ₹250 crore with only industries permissible under the Cauvery Delta regulations allowed to operate. Mr. Stalin said the industrial park aims at generating sustainable employment, ensuring economic development in the region.
He made the announcement at a function at the Nagapattinam Collectorate where the Chief Minister inaugurated 35 completed projects, laid the foundation stone for 206 projects, and distributed welfare assistance to 38,956 beneficiaries all worth ₹423.18 crore.
During the event, Mr. Stalin announced several key projects, including the construction of fish landing centres in Vizhunthamavadi, Vanavanmahadevi, and Kameswaram at a cost of ₹12 crore, and the establishment of three-storeyed multi-purpose disaster centres in Therku Poigainallur and Kodiakkarai at ₹8.5 crore each. He declared the restoration of the 150-year-old Nagapattinam Municipality building at a cost of ₹4 crore, ensuring its heritage value was preserved. Additionally, drainage systems and canals in Nagapattinam, Keezhvelur, and Vedaranyam taluks will be rehabilitated at a cost of ₹32 crore while a new Tamil Nadu Haj House will be constructed at Nanganallur, near Chennai airport, at a cost of ₹65 crore for Haj pilgrims.
Mr. Stalin flagged off 105 new buses of the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (Kumbakonam division), including 54 under the “Magalir Vidiyal” scheme and 51 new suburban buses that will replace older vehicles in Nagapattinam, Kumbakonam, Tiruchi, Pudukottai, Karaikudi, and Karur.
Later, the Chief Minister visited Nambiyar Nagar small fishing harbour, where he met fishermen and heard their concerns. The fishermen requested repairs to tsunami rehabilitation housing and loan waivers for bank debts. Mr. Stalin assured them that appropriate steps would be taken to address their grievances. He visited Nambiyar Nagar Municipal Middle School, where he was greeted by students. He distributed chocolates and inquired about the quality of breakfast and midday meal schemes, engaging in a brief interaction with the students.
Earlier, Mr. Stalin walked from Thambithurai Park to the SP office, engaging with town residents, students, youth, and women. He attended the wedding of DMK’s District Secretary and Chairman of Tamil Nadu Fish Development Corporation (TNFDC) N. Gowthaman’s son.
