Delimitation could reduce Tamil Nadu’s MP share to 5.7%, says Kanimozhi

Tamil Nadu's MP representation in Parliament may decrease due to delimitation based on population, causing confusion and concern.
Tamil Nadu’s share of MPs in Parliament could drop from the current 7.18% to 5.7%, if delimitation is implemented on the basis of State-wise population, according to Thoothukudi Lok Sabha MP Kanimozhi.
Addressing a press conference here on Monday, she said that despite Union Minister Amit Shah’s assurance during his recent visit to Tamil Nadu that the number of MPs of the State would not be reduced, the ongoing discussion on delimitation had created more confusion than clarity.
Historically, delimitation had always been based on population. However, after 1971, the process was halted, as certain States took significant measures to control population growth, while others did not take it seriously. Further, it had been mentioned in Parliament that the Women’s Reservation Bill would be implemented only after delimitation.
Even if Tamil Nadu’s total number of MPs remained unchanged, States such as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Rajasthan, which have seen significant population growth, could gain additional seats. This, in turn, would reduce Tamil Nadu’s overall percentage of representation in Parliament.
Ms. Kanimozhi said Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had extended support to his Tamil Nadu counterpart M.K. Stalin’s stand on the delimitation issue. States such as Tamil Nadu and Kerala had a lower population rate compared to the national average, whereas others like Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh had much higher rates.
Urging the Centre and the Home Ministry to clarify their position on delimitation, she said the issue affected the entire State. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin had convened an all-party meeting to discuss the matter, ensuring a unified stance for Tamil Nadu.
