The Mangaluru city police have taken into custody some persons suspected to be involved in a ‘moral policing’ incident in Someshwar beach, near Ullal, on the outskirts of the city on Thursday evening.
The police said three boys and three girls were at the Someshwara beach. Around 7.30 p.m., a group of about 10 persons questioned the three boys. After asking their names, the group started assaulting the boys. The 112 Emergency Response Support System vehicle of the police, which got wind of the incident, rushed to the spot.
The three injured boys were admitted to a nearby hospital for treatment. Following their complaint on unknown persons, the city police have formed two teams to look for the people allegedly involved in the incident.
Police Commissioner Kuldeep Kumar R Jain said some suspects were being questioned. “We will shortly arrest the accused persons,” he said.
This ‘moral policing’ incident at Someshwar beach is the first to be reported in Mangaluru, since the new Congress Government came to power, which has said it will show ‘zero tolerance’ to such activities.
More than 2.6 lakh village and ward volunteers in Andhra Pradesh, once celebrated as the government’s grassroots champions for their crucial role in implementing welfare schemes, are now in a dilemma after learning that their tenure has not been renewed after August 2023 even though they have been paid honoraria till June 2024. Disowned by both YSRCP, which was in power when they were appointed, and the current ruling TDP, which made a poll promise to double their pay, these former volunteers are ruing the day they signed up for the role which they don’t know if even still exists
