Palm Sunday was observed with special prayers and processions in all churches in Tiruchi on Sunday.
Marking the commencement of the ‘Holy Week’, a large number of Christians took part in the procession. They marched down to St. Mary’s Cathedral in Melapudur.
This annual festival signifies the celebration of the triumphal entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem, where followers welcomed him with palm branches, singing “Hosanna”. The festival, often referred to as ‘Passion Sunday,’ marks the beginning of Holy Week, the final stage of the 40-day Lenten season, which concludes on Easter Sunday (April 20).
To mark this event, devotees were given palm leaves that were woven into a holy cross. Similar processions were taken out in various parts of the central districts. Most Rev. Dr. T. Sagayaraj, Bishop of Thanjavur Diocese, led the procession held at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Thanjavur. At Velankanni and Poondi, a large number of devotees took out the processions to mark the festival.
