Eight killed, eight others injured in explosion at firecracker unit in Andhra Pradesh’s Anakapalli district. The condition of two of the injured is said to be critical. Chief Minister has agreed to extend ₹15 lakh ex gratia to the next of kin of the deceased, says Home Minister Anitha.
Eight persons were killed and eight others injured in an explosion at a firecracker unit at Kailasapatnam of Kotlavuratla mandal in Anakapalli district on Sunday. The condition of two of the injured was said to be critical.
The deceased were identified as D. Ramalakshmi (35) of Rajupeta; P. Papa (40), G. Venubabu (34), S. Govind (40), A. Pallayya (50), all from Kailasapatnam; S. Babu Rao (55) from Chowduvada; D. Nirmala (38) of Vetlapalem; and Hemanth (20) from Bheemunipatnam.
As per the district police, the blast occurred at around 12.45 p.m. The bodies of the deceased persons were scattered across the site. As per the preliminary inquiry by the district administration, 16 workers were present on the premises of the firecracker unit when the explosion took place.
Located at about two-km from the outskirts of the village, locals residents rushed to the firecracker unit upon hearing the blast and began rescuing the injured. Later, the police, along with the emergency services and fire tenders, rushed to the spot and doused the fire. District Collector Vijaya Krishnan and Superintendent of Police Tuhin Sinha monitored the rescue operations.
The injured persons were shifted to the Primary Health Centre (PHC) nearby for providing first-aid, and then to the hospitals in Narsipatnam and Anakapalli. Five persons were shifted to the King George Hospital (KGH) in Visakhapatnam for advanced treatment. Among them, three were injured severely with 90%, 50% and 30% burns, while another sustained fractures. The fifth person had no major injuries, the doctors said.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu asked the Collector to conduct an inquiry and submit a report.
Meanwhile, Home Minister V. Anitha and Anakapalli Member of Parliament C.M. Ramesh rushed to the spot and inspected the accident site.
