Tiruchi Lok Sabha member and the MDMK’s principal secretary Durai Vaiko on Sunday accused the NDA government at the Centre of acting against farmers
Tiruchi Lok Sabha member and the MDMK’s principal secretary Durai Vaiko on Sunday accused the NDA government at the Centre of acting against farmers.
The MP was addressing protesters at a demonstration organised by the MDMK in Perambalur.
He alleged that the government headed by Narendra Modi had failed to implement some promises it made to farmers. While the Centre had written off ₹15 lakh crore corporate loans, it had not written off loans taken by farmers, he said. The Narendra Modi government had brought in three farm laws and subsequently withdrew them owing to the stiff opposition from farmers. The Centre had then given an assurance to implement at least some of their demands but failed to do them, Mr. Durai Vaiko alleged.
The demonstration led by Mr. Durai Vaiko condemned the Centre for “continuously neglecting” Tamil Nadu on a host of issues.
The demonstrators urged the Centre to fix a legally guaranteed minimum support price for agricultural produce. The party condemned the Centre for making “tougher” guidelines with regard to the crop insurance scheme besides urging the Centre to immediately disburse funds for the 100-day Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.
The party appealed to the State government to withdraw the 1% cess levied on maize crop in order to protect the livelihood of farmers.
