Government schools in Tiruchi district have been witnessing an increase in the enrolment of students, especially in primary schools, for the upcoming academic year.
Since the launch of the special admission drive on March 1, the district has registered higher enrolment of students compared to last academic year.
A total of 7,187 students have been enrolled in Class I in government schools in the district, with 4,237 of them enrolled across Tiruchi education district and 2,950 in Musiri education district, as on April 2. In the entire 2024-25 academic year, about 8,285 students were admitted to Class I in the district.
The department has been making efforts to increase enrolment, especially in primary schools, by highlighting various welfare schemes offered to schoolchildren to ease the burden of education on parents.
The school-age population in Tiruchi education district had been identified as 10,173. Teachers and members of the school management committee are yet to begin the door-to-door admission process. The parents, mostly from underprivileged backgrounds, would be educated about the school’s infrastructure, which is expected to boost enrolment.
“The admission process has just begun to pick up pace and will increase in the upcoming weeks. We expect to enrol over 4,000 students in Class I by June,” said K. Kanagarasu, District Elementary Educational Officer, Musiri.
Teachers said the parents were drawn towards the government schools because of welfare schemes, including the Chief Minister’s breakfast scheme, and the upgrade of infrastructure and teaching methods, such as smart classrooms, which are on a par with that of the private schools.
