Chennai Deputy Mayor M. Magesh Kumaar has urged motorists to use the multi-level automated car parking facility on Thanigachalam Road, T. Nagar, instead of parking on the street. He inspected the facility under the Kodambakkam Zone (X) of the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) on Wednesday (April 2, 2025).
Mr. Kumar said proposals for similar facilities at Broadway near the court, Besant Nagar, and Anna Nagar are under consideration by the GCC.
Speaking to the media after the inspection, the Deputy Mayor said the public must use multi-level car parking (MLCP) facilities and officials must raise awareness about them. He also said officials have been asked to improve the car parking facility in T. Nagar to accommodate more vehicles. It can currently hold 512 bikes and 213 cars at a time.
He said discussions with the Greater Chennai Traffic Police on street parking control, a census of users, and price reductions have been planned. He said minor damages were reported in the MLCP, but operations were smooth, and engineers had been instructed to carry out its maintenance.
He said temporary partnerships with ex-servicemen for operating the parking facility were in place, but long-term private partnerships are soon to be brought in. Privatisation is for revenue generation, just like advertisement boards, which will also be considered, he added.
He then visited the pedestrian shopping complex in Pondy Bazaar and held discussions with officials on improving the facility. GCC officials and other elected representatives were present.
