Take a cue from Telangana and launch caste census in Andhra Pradesh, says APCC chief Sharmila

Take a cue from Telangana and launch caste census in Andhra Pradesh, says APCC chief Sharmila. The previous YSRCP government had initiated the process ahead of the elections, but suppressed its details at the behest of the BJP, says the Congress leader.
Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Y.S. Sharmila on Tuesday said the Congress government in neighbouring Telangana had initiated a caste census, which was a historic milestone and a model for the entire nation, and demanded that the TDP-led coalition government in Andhra Pradesh followed suit.
In a post on X, she said, “It is surprising to know that 56% of the Telangana population belong to the Backward Classes, 17% are Scheduled Castes and 10% Scheduled Tribes, meaning that nearly 90% of the population belong to the backward and marginalised communities.”
Stating that the situation in Andhra Pradesh would be similar, she urged the government to also launch the caste census. Though the previous YSRCP government had initiated the process ahead of the elections, the former Chief Minister, Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, at the behest of the BJP, had suppressed the details, and the report never saw the light of day.
Ms. Sharmila said while the Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had been demanding a nation-wide caste census, the BJP was misleading the public by calling it a conspiracy, as part of its ploy to abolish reservation. She urged people not to fall a prey to the BJP’s gameplan.
