Congress leader K. Muraleedharan has criticised the State government and the Indian Medical Association (IMA) for their alleged attempts to protect doctors and health workers reportedly involved in medical negligence cases.
Opening a day-long ‘satyagraha’ by K.K. Harshina, victim of an alleged medical negligence incident at the Government Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode, he claimed that some doctors were under the impression that whatever mistakes they made, the government would protect them. A surgical instrument was reportedly left behind in her stomach during a C-Section surgery held at the hospital in 2017, and it was removed only in 2022.
Mr. Muraleedharan said that some doctors were guilty and deserved punishment. The IMA should not protect everyone, he added. He alleged that though two doctors and as many nurses were found guilty in the case involving Ms. Harshina, the trial against them could not begin at a Kunnamangalam court because the accused managed to get a stay order from the High Court. Mr. Muraleedharan alleged that this happened because the prosecution lawyer took a favourable stand towards the accused.
Later, the Congress leader demanded that Forest Minister A.K. Saseendran be removed from the State Cabinet in view of his failure to address the increasing instances of wild animal attacks in the State. Mr. Muraleedharan alleged that Mr. Saseendran was more interested in engaging in intra-party politics and saving his chair.
