As part of its efforts to beautify public places, the Tiruchi Corporation has initiated beautification work beneath the Thennur Road overbridge.
The project, aimed at transforming the area into a beautified public space, includes creating seating spaces, a stage, and a walking track under the Namakku Naame scheme at a cost of ₹32 lakh. At present, the portion of the bridge adjacent to the Mahatma Gandhi Centenary Vidyalaya has been spruced up and seating spaces constructed.
The beautification work, currently under way, will not only improve the visual appeal of the area but also provide a recreational space for residents and visitors, according to officials. The seating spaces will offer a comfortable spot for people to relax while the stage will serve as a platform for cultural events and performances.
The civic body has planned to install artifacts and other decorative features to add to the area’s charm. They have plans to beautify the other end of the bridge which is currently a dumpsite for debris and scrap items.
“The project is expected to be completed by March, and once finished, it will provide a welcoming public space for the public to enjoy,” said a senior Corporation official.
This project materialised almost two decades after the Corporation announced its plan to transform the space under the bridges into something useful. For so long, the entire space under the Thennur bridge served as a convenient shelter for encroachers, including scrap dealers. Construction debris and electrical waste were dumped at the spot, making it a junkyard.
Meanwhile, around 50 platform shops have been developed on the vacant space under the Palakkarai Road overbridge for vegetable and fruit vendors to address traffic congestion caused by street vendors who set up pushcarts and stalls on the narrow roads in the locality. The civic body expects to relocate the vendors after forming the vending committee.
