Educational institutions and research organisations in and around Tiruchi celebrated the National Science Day with a host of activities this week.
The day, celebrated on February 28, honours the discovery of the ‘Raman Effect’ by Nobel laureate Sir C.V. Raman in 1928.
The ICAR – National Research Centre for Banana (ICAR-NRCB) organised an open day for students, farmers, and the general public as part of its Science Day programme on Friday.
V.A. Parthasarathy, former director of ICAR-Indian Institute of Spices Research, Kozhikode, and V.G. Malathi, retired principal scientist of ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi were among the special invitees.
In his address, Mr. Parthasarathy paid tribute to eminent Indian scientists and urged students to develop innovative thinking. Ms. Malathi spoke about India’s scientific heritage, advancements in stem cell therapy, and the latest breakthroughs in genome editing.
An exhibition on banana varietal diversity, including ICAR-NRCB-developed cultivars, popular varieties, landraces, and wild germplasm lines was held on the campus. Visitors were taken to the ICAR-NRCB farm, where they explored the Common Incubation Centre (CIC), which houses five production lines of value-added banana products.
R. Selvarajan, director, ICAR-NRCB, and Guru Aranganathan, retired professor of Agricultural Extension, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Tiruchi, spoke.

Through the agency of the Federation of OMR Resident Associations, the IT Corridor now has an annual literary festival, a book reading club that is gaining in popularity by the day and regular book swap events. The IT crowd is clearly trying to honour the physical book in more ways than one. The greatest evidence of this trend is how an increasing number of gated communities on the Corridor are reserving space, time and resources for establishing a reading space. Based on their experiences, a primer on how to set up and sustain a community library
