Telangana government aims to boost medical tourism in Hyderabad with a health tourism policy and digital health cards.
Telangana government plans to introduce a health tourism policy, positioning Hyderabad as a premier destination for medical treatment, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy said at a felicitation ceremony for AIG Hospitals chairman D. Nageshwar Reddy, who was recently awarded the Padma Vibhushan.
“Earlier, people used to travel abroad for medical treatment, but now the trend has reversed. Patients from across the world are coming to India, particularly Hyderabad, for healthcare services,” the Chief Minister pointed out. To further boost medical tourism, the State government is planning to develop a dedicated health campus near the airport on a 1,000-acre site. This facility aims to provide comprehensive medical care to international patients.
Mr. Revanth Reddy also underscored Telangana’s role in pharmaceutical production, noting that the State manufactures one-third of India’s bulk drugs. He recalled the initiatives of former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, who launched the Aarogyasri scheme, and highlighted the Congress government’s decision to increase the scheme’s coverage from ₹5 lakh to ₹10 lakh per person after coming to power in Telangana.
Addressing changes in healthcare practices, the Chief Minister acknowledged the decline of the “family doctor” concept due to increasing specialisation in medical fields. To modernise healthcare administration, he announced plans to introduce digital health cards for every resident of Telangana. These cards, developed in alignment with data privacy policies, will store individuals’ medical records digitally, ensuring seamless access to healthcare information.
“Going forward, data is the real asset, and we will ensure that this transition to digital health records happens smoothly,” Mr. Revanth Reddy said.
