New Mangalore Port awarded 2nd best container port in India, excelling in efficiency and service excellence.
The New Mangalore Port was awarded as the second best container port in the country (handling less than 0.5 million TEUs) by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.
Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal presented the award to New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) chairman A.V. Ramana at the Viksit Bharat post-Budget meeting in Mumbai on February 27, said a release.
NMPA said the award highlights port’s exceptional efficiency and service excellence in container cargo handling. The ranking of Indian ports was conducted under the Sagar Aankalan ranking framework introduced by MoPSW in February 2024, aligning Indian ports with the Logistics Performance Index (LPI) of the World Bank. This evaluation aims to enhance efficiency, competitiveness and global standing of Indian ports by assessing key operational and logistics performance metrics.
With India being the largest coffee exporting hub, NMPA recorded a 18.67% growth in container cargo during FY2023-24—a milestone achieved through the seamless transition from a tool port-based model to a fully operational PPP container terminal under JSW Infrastructure in 2022.
The transformation was achieved through proactive policy interventions by NMPA’s management, including, fixed window berthing policy for streamlined vessel scheduling, integrated yard management for optimised cargo movement, RFID-based gate admittance system for seamless access control, e-kart ticketing and fully digitised document processing for efficiency, automated weighbridges and dynamic storage solutions etc. These helped NMPA to maintain one of the fastest container vessel turnaround times in India, even surpassing global benchmarks set by the World Bank for container handling efficiency.
To further strengthen EXIM trade in the region, NMPA has initiated Phase II of the Container Terminal Mechanisation to enhance capacity, improve operational efficiency and position NMPA as a key trade hub in the Indian maritime sector.
