Munnar hill station in Idukki experiences sub-zero temperatures, impacting tourism and agriculture sectors, with frost expected to continue.
The Munnar hill station in Idukki is continuing to witness sub-zero temperature. Munnar witnessed the lowest temperature of the season with Chenduvarai witnessing –1°C on Saturday morning.
As per data from the United Planters Association of South India (Upasi), a tea research foundation at Nallathanni, near Munnar, Devikulam recorded 1°C, Silent Valley and Letchmi 2°C, Sevenmalai and Upasi Nallathanni 3°C, and R&D Mattupetty 7°C.
According to an Upasi official, the morning temperature recorded at Munnar town on Saturday was 3°C Celsius. “The day temperature at the Munnar hill station on Friday was 27°C and the morning temperature 3°C,” he says.
Normally, frost covers the valleys and hills in the first week of January. But for the past several years, winter season has lasted long into February.
“The present freezing weather may continue for the next few days,” says climatologist Gopakumar Cholayil.
“The freezing weather will provide an extra push to the tourism sector in Munnar. But if frost continues, it will negatively impact the farm sector, especially tea,” says Mr. Cholayil.
According to tourism stakeholders, most tourists prefer to visit Munnar during the winter season. The normal winter season starts in November, with extreme cold experienced in the first week of January.
