Madras High Court grants bail to school staff in septic tank death case, with compensation to parents.
The Madras High Court on Friday granted bail to the correspondent, principal as well as a teacher of St. Mary’s Matriculation Higher Secondary School at Vikravandi in Villupuram district in a case booked against them for causing the death of a kindergarten student who fell into a septic tank after a rusted lid on the manhole gave way on December 3, 2024.
Justice A.D. Jagadish Chandira granted the relief to Sister A. Emelda, Sister A. Dominic Mary and the teacher A. Angel after senior counsel Rev.Fr. A. Xavier Arulraj said, the petitioners were under incarceration since January 4, 2025 and that the school management was willing to pay an ex-gratia of ₹5 lakh, apart from ₹3 lakh offered by the State government, to the parents.
The judge directed the school correspondent to submit a demand draft, drawn in favour of the child’s father, before the trial court which, in turn, was directed to hand it over to the parents. After being let out on bail, the petitioners were directed to stay in Chennai for a week and sign before the Inspector of Mylapore police station every day besides following all other regular bail conditions.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID), probing the death of contractor, Sachin Panchal, who allegedly ended his life in Bidar on December 26 last year, arrested five persons, including the prime accused Rajkumar Kapnoor, a former member of the Kalaburagi Mahanagara Palike, and reportedly a follower of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister, Priyank Kharge, on Friday.
