CPI Andhra Pradesh unit assistant secretary J.V.S.N. Murthy, who was arrested in connection with the LG Polymers case last Friday, was released from Visakhapatnam Central Prison on Thursday. He was welcomed by the CPI cadre outside the jail.
A case was booked against Mr. Murthy on charges of violating the COVID-19 protocol when he staged a protest at the LG Polymers plant in the city, demanding justice for the victims of the styrene monomer vapour leak from the factory.
Mr. Murthy said that he was arrested and sent to remand on the plea that he had not applied for recall of the arrest warrant.
Describing his arrest as a ‘vindictive measure’, he said on the day on which he went to the court, the judge had gone to the Juvenile Court and that he had planned to go to court the next day to apply for recall.
The Gopalapatnam Police had refused to listen to him. He said that the issue would be discussed at the party meeting. He thanked all the party leaders, who strive to secure his release on bail.
CPI district secretary M. Pydiraju said that the police officials concerned had caused problems by changing their stance on acceptance of sureties, first saying that cash would be accepted and later declining it, and insisting on Central government employees signing the surety. “It is nothing but a vindictive measure,” he said.
CPI district executive members A. Vimala, K. Satyanarayana, R. Srinivasa Rao, Sk. Rahaman, P. Chandrasekhar, Md. Begum, K. Vanajakshi and A. Devudamma were among those who were present.
