The Tiruchi Corporation has invited tenders to undertake additional work at the new truck terminal in Panjapur along the Tiruchi-Madurai National Highway.
The construction of the truck terminal began along with the integrated bus terminus in October 2022 and is built on a 29-acre land with 11,523 sq m built-up area near the IBT at an estimated ₹65.90 crore.
Recently, a tender had been floated by the civic body to identify a suitable contractor for undertaking additional work at the upcoming facility. An additional sum of ₹9.50 crore utilising funds from the 15th Finance Commission and Corporation Funds 2024-25 had been allocated for the electrical, plumbing, and other pending work at the terminal.
“All the pending work will be completed within this month, and the facility will be inaugurated along with the IBT,” said a senior Corporation official.
The terminal will house dormitories, canteen, toilets, bathrooms, and drinking water facilities for the drivers. In addition to the basic amenities, the terminal will feature commercial space in which the shops will be rented out. It is aimed at establishing facilities to accommodate around 256 trucks at a time.
The facility is being set up because of its inadequate parking space and lack of basic amenities for trucks in the city. The civic body will collect a user charge from the truck drivers, and all the information, including the truck number and the time of entry and exit of the vehicle, will be recorded.
With the upcoming integrated vegetable and fruit market complex in Panjapur, the facility would be of great use for the truck operators, especially those plying from neighbouring districts via Tiruchi-Madurai NH, said an official.
