Opposition criticizes UP CM for praising boatman who turned out to be a criminal with multiple cases.
In a twist to the tale, the boatman who got much praise by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for earning ₹30 crore during the 45-day Maha Kumbh mela, turned out to be a criminal with multiple cases lodged against him in Prayagraj. The Opposition slammed the Chief Minister for showering praise and glorifying a criminal.
Praising the boatman without naming him, Mr. Adityanath had said, “I am sharing a success story with you about the boatman who had 130 boats and earned ₹30 crore in 45 days. Means one boat has earned ₹23 lakh in 45 days. If we talk about per day income of these boats, it will be something between ₹50,000-52,000.”
The boatman praised by the Chief Minister, Pintu Mahara, who lives in the Arail area of Prayagraj, had claimed that he sold the jewellery of the woman at home to buy boats. He added that he managed to earn such a big amount of money because of one ‘bold decision’ taken buy him.
‘I am into boat business in Pryagraj for decades now. Earlier, I had 60-70 boats which I use to run since 2019. When I saw the influx of devotees in Kumbh in 2019, I could fairly anticipate the kind of influx which will come to Maha Kumbh in 2025. This is when I had decided to put all my savings in buying new boats before Maha Kumbh,” Mr. Mahra said in media interviews.
According to the police, Mr. Mahara, who has now become a talk of the town in Prayagraj, has multiple cases lodged against him including of attempt to murder. The Maha Kumbh Mela police had filed a First Information Report against him on February 11 for extorting money and harassing other boatmen.
“He has cases of murder, attempt to murder, rioting, harassment and extortion. His father and brother also had criminal cases against them,” a senior police official told The Hindu.
Congress leader Supriya Shrinate came down heavily on the Uttar Pradesh government for glorifying a criminal.
