The Chamarajanagar district administration is gearing up for the Cabinet meeting to be held at MM Hills on February 15. It was originally scheduled to be held on February 13 but was postponed in view of the Global Investors Meet in Bengaluru on February 13 and 14.
This was stated by Chamarajanagar district in-charge Minister K. Venkatesh, who reviewed the preparations and held a meeting with officials in Chamarajanagar on Tuesday.
The officials of all the departments were directed to prepare a list of development works and projects under way and the progress achieved so far. Besides, they were asked to list out the impediments, if any, that need to be addressed. “We will bring all development issues pertaining to the district to the notice of the Chief Minister and ensure that the programmes are implemented,” said Mr. Venkatesh.
In reply to a question, he said the full-fledged Cabinet meeting will also discuss issues and projects pertaining to districts of Mysuru, Mandya, Hassan, and Kodagu.
Though Mr. Venkatesh was reticent, sources said issues related to tribal affairs, human-animal conflict, drinking water, reviving of sericulture, industrialisation etc. could come under special focus. There are also pending issues, including declaring MM Hills Wildlife Sanctuary as a tiger reserve, for which there is also opposition from a section of people. Besides, relocation of tribal hamlet of Chengadi is pending since years and has not gained traction despite identification of alternative land abutting the forest boundary.
Incidentally, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had promised to sanction funds for a ropeway connecting Bhara Chukki while inaugurating the festival of waterfalls in August 2024. There were also demands for creating a tourism circuit and Mr. Siddaramaiah had stated that Chamarajanagar was ideal for tourism development. There are also pending demands for amenities at Biligiriranganathaswamy temple which was recently renovated, promotion of adventure sports.
There are also expectations that the Chief Minister, who has repeatedly visited the district, may announce a special package for Chamarajanagar which is reckoned to be among the most backward regions in the State.
