22-year-old sentenced to 20 years in prison for raping minor and sharing video on social media

A Mangaluru court has sentenced a 22-year-old resident of Udupi to 20 years in prison and a fine of ₹1 lakh on finding him guilty for sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl and sharing the video of the rape on social media.
The Additional District and Sessions Judge, Fast Track Sessions Court-2, Mangaluru, K.S. Maanu sentenced Ashwath, a resident of Hebri taluk in Udupi district of Karnataka, to 20 years’ rigorous imprisonment and a fine of ₹50,000 for the offences under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 6 of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. He was also sentenced to three years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of ₹5,000 for the offence under Section 363 of the IPC, two years of simple imprisonment and a fine of ₹5,000 for offence under Section 12 of POCSO, and three years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of ₹40,000 for offence under Section 67(B) of Information Technology Act.
Ashwath befriended the victim through Instagram. He was charged with abducting the 17-year-old victim in his motorcycle from Mulki bus stand on March 15, 2023. He took her to a lodge in Manipal. He raped her and recorded the sexual assault on video on the victim’s mobile phone before transferring the clip to his own phone. He posted the video on social media.
Among the people with whom the video was shared was the victim’s father, the chargesheet stated. Based on his complaint, the Mulki police arrested Ashwath and filed the chargesheet.
The judge said the total fine amount of ₹1 lakh will be given as compensation to the victim. The victim is also entitled to additional compensation of ₹4 lakh from the District Legal Services Authority under the Victim Compensation Scheme, the judge noted in his judgment dated January 10.
