Telangana's Warangal Airport development approved by Central government, with 253 acres allocated for expansion and modernization.
Telangana will soon have an operational airport with the Central government approving the development of Warangal Airport for which the State government has already acquired part of the required land.
The airport will come up at the existing airstrip at Mamnoor. Roads and Buildings Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy said that the State government had previously issued a Government Order (GO) for the acquisition of 256 acres of land, allocating ₹205 crore for the purpose.
The Warangal Airport was a non-starter due to the GMR that runs the Hyderabad Airport which had a clause in its agreement with the Government of India that there should be no airport within 150 km aerial distance from Hyderabad for 25 years from the beginning of its operations.
However, Mr. Venkat Reddy held discussions with the Hyderabad International Airport Limited (HIAL) initially, and later in a meeting with Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy the HIAL agreed to give a No Objection Certificate (NOC) withdrawing the 150-Km condition.
The Ministry of Aviation, in its order issued on Friday, permitted the development of the airport and instructed the government to hand over 253 acres of land to the Airports Authority of India (AAl) for the development of Warangal Airport.
However, the order makes it clear that this waiver of the 150-km condition of the HIAL was limited to Warangal Airport only and the NOC cannot be considered for the government’s subsequent plans to develop any other airports by the Airports Authority of India in violation of the existing clause of 150 km.
The Mamnoor Airport already possesses 696 acres of land. R&B Minister Mr. Venkat Reddy has already announced that the government plans to utilize 253 acres for the expansion of the runway, construction of a terminal building, establishment of an Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower and installation of navigation instruments.
