Two Tamil inscriptions from Alathudaiyanpatti temple in Tiruchi district deciphered

ASI deciphers Chola period inscriptions from Arulmigu Somanathar Temple, revealing historical details and urging public involvement in preservation.
The Epigraphy Division of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has recently deciphered two inscriptions copied from Arulmigu Somanathar Temple at Alathudaiyanpatti near Thuraiyur in Tiruchi district. The inscriptions dated back to the Chola period.
B. Charumathi, Assistant Epigraphist, ASI, who copied the two inscriptions on maplitho papers from the walls of the temple in September said the two inscriptions written in Tamil were deciphered by the experts recently and found to be dating back to 13th century. One inscription has information about giving orders to Thirugnanasammandha Pandidhar for a specific period to carry out thirupani in the temple. It dates back to the period of Chola King Rajaraja - III.
Another inscription records an order of the Nattars Valluvappadi (Nattolai) to Devarkanmi and accountant of the Azhagiya Someswaramudiya Nayanar Temple at Periyanavalur covenying the grant of dry and wet lands, which was leased at an amount of 30,000 kasu of per ma for the providing services to the God and Goddess of the temple.
K. Munirathnam Reddy, Director (Epigraphy), ASI Mysore urged the people to alert the Archeology Department if they come across any inscriptions and hero stones. He also said three teams of epigraphists and experts would commence copying inscriptions from temples in various districts of Tamil Nadu soon.
