
Reading books should be made a people’s movement, says Minister

Tamil Nadu Rural Development Minister inaugurates annual book fair in Theni, promoting reading culture and education across districts.
Appealing to citizens to make reading books a people’s movement, Tamil Nadu Rural Development Minister I. Periasamy inaugurated the third annual book fair at Theni on Sunday.
After visiting a few of the book stalls, accompanied by Collector Ranjeet Singh, MLA Maharajan and other officials, he said Chief Minister M. K. Stalin was instrumental in opening such book fairs across the State. The idea was to not confine such activities only to Chennai, but take them to the districts also. The book fair had numerous collections and noted authors from top publishers were participating. Hence, it would benefit book lovers.
He hoped that people would enjoy the book fair without fail in the next seven days.
The State government topped in the country for earmarking the largest quantum of funds for education department in its annual budget. The youth should make use of such opportunities and come up in their lives as knowledge alone would help them reach greater heights, he added.
The Collector said that reading books, other than the subjects taught in schools and colleges, would help students to understand many useful things in their lives. Hence, every parent had the responsibility to encourage their children to read books.
The eight-day book fair is being held at Menaka Mills grounds and the district administration has organised it in association with the Department of Public Library. The fair would have special programmes for participants, and renowned orators and writers would address the gathering daily. It will conclude on March 30.
District Revenue Officer I. Mahalakshmi and Assistant Superintendent of Police Kelkar Subramania Balachandra were among those who participated at the event.
