Elston Estate workers in Wayanad to receive ₹6 crore relief for landslides, including PF arrears and gratuity payments.
Workers of Elston Estate that will be acquired for rehabilitating survivors of the Mundakkai-Chooralmala landslides in Wayanad will be given relief to the tune of nearly ₹6 crore by the estate management.
The decision was taken at discussions held by Labour department officials with the estate management and representatives of workers’ unions on the directives of Minister for Labour V. Sivankutty.
The management will pay the workers provident fund (PF) arrears to the tune of ₹2.73 crore for the period from February 2015 to December 2024 and penal interest on it as decided by the provident fund commissioner; bonus of ₹4.43 lakh to the workers for 2023-24 and 2024-25; annual leave surrender benefit to the tune of ₹14.20 lakh for 2022, 2023, and 2024; ₹4.46 lakh in salary arrears for 2019 and 2023; ₹7.21 lakh that was excess contribution to provident fund; workers’ and supervisors’ salary arrears for four months to the tune of ₹17.93 lakh; ₹3.25 lakh as weather protective benefit to workers for six years; gratuity payment of ₹2.35 crore for 150 workers, including that in the deputy labour commissioner’s order; and ₹33.67 lakh in unclaimed dues.
It was also decided to pay gratuity and retrenchment compensation of 15 days’ pay for one year of service to 33 permanent workers in the Pulpara division. Talks will also be held on giving severance pay to 14 temporary workers in the Pulpara division.
The management should pay the benefits to the workers from the compensation paid by the government when the latter takes over the estate.
Additional labour commissioner Sunil K.M. chaired the talks.
