Round table meeting in Haveri urges government to save university, with support from seers, academicians, and activists.
A round table meeting on saving Haveri University, led by various seers, academicians and eminent personalities from different walks of life in Haveri recently has resolved to urge the State government to immediately drop the proposal on closure or merger of the university.
The meeting also resolved to chalk out plans for intensifying the agitation to save the university, in case the government fails to respond positively to their demand.
Earlier, participating in the round table meeting, Sri Sadashiva Swami of Hukkeri Mutt said that solving the unemployment problem by providing education to youths to make them self-reliant should be equally important to the government which is focussing on implementing the guarantee schemes to fulfil people’s aspirations.
Condemning the proposed move for merger of Haveri University, Sri Sadashiv Swami said that all the seers of the district are committed to fighting for saving the university and urged the government to provide the requisite funds for the development of the university instead of closing it.
Taking exception to the proposed move, the former Vice-Chancellor of Karnatak University A. Murigeppa questioned the rationale behind it. He said that merger or closure of the university will result in hardships to students who will then be forced to travel to Dharwad even for getting a certificate.
Saving the university will benefit 20,000 students in the district, he said.
President of the district unit of Kannada Sahitya Parishat Lingayya B. Hiremath said that the move will deprive several students of backward classes of higher education and urged the government to provide the requisite funds.
