Tribhuvan Sahkari University Bill will strengthen cooperative movement in the country, says Visakhapatnam MP
Visakhapatnam MP Sribharat Mathukumilli emphasised on the transformative potential of the Tribhuvan Sahkari University Bill during a parliamentary discussion, stressing its role in strengthening India’s cooperative movement through education and professional training.
He said that the bill proposes establishing India’s first national Cooperative University to address critical gaps in the sector. With over 8 lakh cooperative societies nationwide, including 17,000 in Andhra Pradesh, the MP noted that many struggle with operational challenges. The university would focus on developing skilled professionals, conducting research, and creating standardised training programmes tailored to different cooperative sectors.
Mr Sribharat particularly highlighted how coastal States like Andhra Pradesh could benefit through specialised programmes for fishing cooperatives.
“The university could help our fishing communities with modern techniques and better market linkages while preserving the cooperative spirit,” he stated.
The MP suggested this model could eventually lead to similar institutions across States, each focussing on regional priorities including Andhra Pradesh.
He also touched on reviving non-functional cooperatives through the proposed university’s training programmes.
The MP highlighted that concept of developing model cooperatives in each district that could be developed for strengthening cooperatives across the country.
