Tamil Nadu Law Minister addresses narcotic circulation and rural employment guarantee scheme, highlighting state achievements and challenges.
Law Minister S. Regupathy, on Sunday (March 30, 2025) said Tamil Nadu did not figure in the list of top 10 States in the country where there was higher circulation of narcotic substances. Speaking to journalists in Pudukottai, Mr. Regupathy alleged circulation of narcotic substances was the highest in Rajasthan, which is ruled by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Narcotic substances seized in Gujarat alone were worth ₹7,350 crore in the last five years followed by Maharashtra where narcotic substances valued at ₹2,118 crore had been confiscated. The people of Tamil Nadu should ponder as to where there was higher circulation of narcotic substances, the Minister said.
According to him, the DMK government was trying its best in curbing the circulation of narcotic substances coming from other States and seizing them. Replying to a query, Mr. Regupathy said Tamil Nadu was the best in the country in implementing the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme and had received awards for its best execution.
Various works under this scheme had been carried out in Tamil Nadu, Mr. Regupathy said, adding that the State government had been seeking funds under the scheme from the Centre to provide salary for the labourers that was due to them for five months.
Answering a query pertaining to delimitation, Mr. Regupathy said Home Minister Amit Shah had stated that southern States would not lose Parliamentary seats and wondered whether he would give an assurance to the effect that Lok Sabha seats would not increase in the north Indian States.
