Mixed responses to the judgement in the rape and murder case at R.G. Kar MCH spark protests and demands for justice.
The pronouncement of judgement in the rape and murder of a doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on Saturday (January 18, 2025) evoked mixed response in social and political circles.
A large crowd had gathered outside the Sealdah court, and protests erupted when Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das pronounced Sanjay Roy, prime accused, guilty of the rape and murder.
Representatives of West Bengal Junior Doctors Front held a rally from Sealdah to Moulali demanding that the others who were held responsible for the crime be punished too. There is a widespread perception among people, especially doctors and parents, that the crime could not be a work of just one person.
Debasish Haldar, a protesting junior doctor, said, “Until everyone who is directly or indirectly related to this crime is brought to justice, we will not rest. If the government, court, or police think that they have given the ultimate judgement and we will stop fighting, then they are wrong.”
Welcoming the verdict, the parents of the doctor, who were present in the court, said that the judgement does not mean that the investigation in the case will be over. “We respect the judgement and ask for the highest order of punishment for the accused. But we believe the investigation will go on and more culprits will be caught,” they said. The court will pronounce the term of punishment on Monday (January 20, 2025).

The pronouncement by the court marks an important milestone in the case as protests demanding justice for the R.G. Kar MCH victim had erupted across West Bengal since August 2024. Members of the medical community and civil society took out the protest.
