
Puducherry Budget: Govt. to introduce green mobility policy for faster adoption of electric and hybrid vehicles

The Puducherry government will soon notify its green mobility policy aimed at providing the necessary impetus for faster adoption of green technologies, such as electric and hybrid vehicles, and accelerate the Union Territory’s (UT) transition to environment-friendly transportation.

The Budget for 2025-26 presented in the Assembly on Wednesday (March 12, 2025) stated the government had proposed to provide subsidy towards the purchase of electric vehicles as well as 50% concession on road tax while registering such vehicles.
Under the PM e-bus Sewa scheme, the government has submitted a proposal for operating 75 electric buses under Gross Cost Contract (GCC). The Union government has already finalised the tenders, and the approval of the Puducherry government will be communicated within this month.
As part of the scheme, as many as 25 electric buses (9 metre) and 50 (12 metre) will be deployed in Puducherry, ensuring that two-thirds of the bus fleet of the Puducherry Road Transport Corporation (PRTC) are electrified. The government has proposed to operate 10 ultra-deluxe buses through PRTC on long distance routes.
Additionally, 10 electric buses will be deployed for Karaikal, and five each for Mahe and Yanam through Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode.
The Union government has also sanctioned ₹8.15 crore for the establishment of an e-depot and for Behind the Meter Infrastructure work at Mettupalayam.
Under the Smart City Mission, the operation of 38 e-rickshaws and 25 e-buses in the city will commence shortly. Moreover, the work on the establishment of 15 Smart bus shelters will be completed by this month.
