Two drinking water schemes for Radhapuram, Nanguneri constituencies to be ready this year, says Appavu

Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker M. Appavu inspects drinking water schemes benefiting over 1.50 lakh families in various regions.
While the drinking water scheme being implemented on an outlay of ₹605 crore for benefiting Radhapuram and Valliyoor areas will be ready by May-end, the second project meant for Kalakkad municipality and seven town panchayats will be completed by October this year, Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker M. Appavu has said.
Speaking to reporters here after inspecting the drinking water schemes, along with Collector R. Sukumar and Nanguneri MLA Ruby R. Manoharan on Wednesday, Mr. Appavu said the drinking water scheme being implemented by TWAD Board benefiting over 96,000 houses in 831 villages in Palayamkottai, Cheranmahadevi, Kalakkad, Valliyoor, Nanguneri, Radhapuram union would be completed by May 31.
The second drinking water project being executed on an outlay of ₹423.13 crore for benefiting the residents of Kalakkad municipality and Ervadi, Thirukkurunkudi, Nanguneri, Moolaikkaraipatti, Panagudi, Valliyoor and Thisaiyanvilai town panchayats would be ready for commissioning by October-end.
“The Tamirabharani river is the source for both the drinking water projects and would benefit over 1.50 lakh families in Radhapuram, Nanguneri and a part of Ambasamudram Assembly constituencies,” said Mr. Appavu.
Accompanied by Mr. Sukumar and TWAD Board officials, Mr. Appavu inspected wells being sunk on the Tamirabharani bed, construction of water treatment plant at Thiruviruthanpuli on Cheranmahadevi – Kalakkad Road and another plant at Singikulam, overhead tanks and sumps being built at various spots for distribution of drinking water and discussed with the TWAD Board officials about the progress of the schemes.
The well sunk on the Tamirabharani near Mela Munneerpallam will supply 21.71 million litres of surface water a day to Valliyoor and Radhapuram region. After being pumped from this well, the water will be taken to the treatment plant at Singikulam through 16.06 km-long pipes and the purified water will be stored in two sumps with the capacity of 7.50 lakh litres and 2.50 lakh litres, respectively. From these sumps, the water will be pumped to primary overhead tank with 10 lakh litre capacity at Pirandaimalai for supplying to other areas.
From the another overhead tank coming up at South Valliyoor for supplying the water to 20 village panchayats, the water will be taken to Radhapuram overhead tank for supplying drinking water to 14 village panchayats.

After Chief Minister Siddaramaiah assured protesting members that he would call a meeting of legislators after the Budget session to look into their problems, the BJP and Janata Dal (S) withdrew their dharna in the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday on the issue of releasing honorarium from the State exchequer for Congress workers involved in the implementation of the five guarantee schemes.
