AIADMK's Edappadi K. Palaniswami urges DMK government to accept paddy from farmers without moisture content restrictions.
AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Sunday urged the DMK government to accept paddy from farmers in direct procurement centres (DPCs) without imposing any restrictions on the moisture content.
In a statement, Mr. Palaniswami said crops had been affected in Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur districts among others due to the rains.
The former Chief Minister insisted that the State government depute officials to ascertain the losses incurred by farmers due to failing monsoon so as to help them claim crop insurance at once.
Mr. Palaniswami also urged the State government to depute ‘dryers’ to Cauvery delta region to help farmers dry their crops.
In view of the prevailing weather conditions, he urged government to relax acceptable moisture content of paddy for procurement in Tamil Nadu from 17% to 22%.
Samba crop that was about to be harvested, has been affected in various parts of the State due to the weather conditions, the AIADMK leader pointed out.
Since the paddy could not be procured in direct procurement centres at noon, the moisture content in the fresh produce was high, Mr. Palaniswami pointed out.
