Family donates brain dead woman's organs in Kerala, benefiting needy patients in Mangaluru through successful transplants.
Family members of a woman patient from Kerala who was declared brain dead by doctors donated her vital organs to the needy in Mangaluru on Sunday.
Two kidneys and cornea of the patient A.V. Prasanna, 59, were retrieved at the Indiana Hospital and Heart Institute in the city.
In a press note, the hospital said Ms. Prasanna, a resident of Kannur in Kerala, was brought to the hospital on March 7 following weakness and seizures. She was diagnosed with Diffuse SAH and Aneurysmal Bleed. A team of experts examined and declared Ms. Prasanna as brain dead. Following counselling by treating doctors and Hospital’s Organ Donation convenor Vishwanath Gowda, Ms. Prasanna’s family members agreed to donate her organs.
The same day, one kidney was transplanted to a needy patient at the Indiana Hospital. Doctors K.J. Pradeep, Shravan Shanbhag, Mujeeb Rehman, Gururaj Tantri, Seema Alva and Gurunandan were involved in the retrieval of organs and transplantation of one kidney. Another kidney and cornea were sent to KMC Hospital, Manipal.
