Inaugural tailoring course at Hyderabad prison empowers women inmates with vocational skills for future independence and reintegration.
A tailoring course for women inmates was inaugurated on Monday at the Special Prison for Women, Hyderabad, aiming to equip them with vocational skills and financial independence for a better future after their release.
The initiative was launched in collaboration with the Department of Employment and Training, Telangana, and the National Academy of Construction under the SANKALP Scheme, ensuring industry-standard training.
Speaking at the event, Special Chief Secretary, Department of Employment and Training, Sanjay Kumar, highlighted the significance of the programme in empowering incarcerated women by providing them with livelihood opportunities and a path towards self-reliance.
Director General of Prisons & Correctional Services Soumya Mishra emphasised the importance of rehabilitation, stating that prisons should be centres for reform rather than mere punishment. She underlined that skill development initiatives such as this tailoring course can help inmates reintegrate into society with dignity and independence.
“The training programme will enable women inmates to learn tailoring techniques, which can later serve as a means of self-employment or facilitate job opportunities post-release,” said the DG Prisons.
