RMC Chennai issues orange weather warning for heavy rainfall in south Tamil Nadu, with temperatures expected to rise.
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, has upgraded its weather warning to orange for four districts in south Tamil Nadu on Tuesday (March 11, 2025). These districts are likely to receive rainfall of heavy to very heavy intensity.
A cyclonic circulation over the Equatorial Indian Ocean and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal will influence wet weather over the State, particularly over the south and delta districts this week. On Tuesday, widespread rainfall will cover many places in the State as the weather system moves closer.
According to the RMC, isolated places in Kanniyakumari, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, and Thoothukudi districts may receive heavy to very heavy rainfall and eight more districts, including Sivaganga, Pudukottai, Ramanathapuram, and Tiruvarur, also have chances of heavy rainfall on Tuesday.
Heavy rainfall may continue over Kanniyakumari, Tirunelveli, and Thoothukudi districts on Wednesday (March 12, 2025), officials said. Chennai too is likely to get light to moderate rainfall in some areas on Tuesday.
Summer showers may bring relief from soaring day temperatures in some parts of the State. However, rainfall will begin to be limited to isolated places of the State from Thursday (March 13, 2025).
On Monday (March 10, 2025), Madurai and Erode registered the hottest day temperature of 37 degrees Celsius. Chennai’s Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recorded close to normal temperature of 33 degrees Celsius and 33.7 degrees Celsius.
While the wet spell is likely to last till March 16 over one or two places in the State, Puducherry, and Karaikal, the RMC has also predicted a rise in day temperature by two-three degrees Celsius in one or two places of Tamil Nadu between March 13 and 15 once the rainfall reduces.
