The southern bench of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has asked the Tamil Nadu government for an update on its efforts to restore Ennore Creek.
The bench was hearing a petition filed by environmental activist K. Saravanan, who has demanded that the Ennore wetland be officially recognised under the Wetlands (Conservation and Management) Rules, 2017. The bench, comprising Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana and expert member Satyagopal, sought details from the Tamil Nadu State Wetland Authority on the steps taken so far to restore the creek.
The petition also urged the court to direct the government to submit an action plan outlining the extent of wetland illegally converted, its efforts to restore it, and details of the ₹40 crore allocated for Ennore Creek’s restoration.
The bench referred to a government order issued by the Department of Environment, Climate Change, and Forests, which included Ennore Creek’s restoration under the Tamil Nadu Sustainable Harnessing Ocean Resources and Blue Economy (TN SHORE) initiative, also known as the Tamil Nadu Coastal Restoration Mission. As part of this, the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) was tasked with restoring the creek, which has been severely polluted by industrial infrastructure and effluents.
Highlighting the importance of the creek’s health and its impact on the rest of Chennai, Mr. Satyagopal also asked whether the Ennore wetland was included in the National Wetland Atlas prepared by the Space Applications Centre, ISRO, Ahmedabad.
The matter has been scheduled for the next hearing on April 23, 2025.
