Mysuru Yoga Okkuta celebrates Ratha Saptami with mass yoga and Surya Namaskara, promoting health and tradition.
Mysuru Yoga Okkuta conducted a mass yoga and surya namaskara programme to mark Ratha Saptami here on Tuesday.
Mass yoga and Surya Namaskara have been conducted by the Okkuta on Ratha Saptami day since 2001. This year marks the Silver Jubilee. It was conducted opposite the Kote Anjaneyaswamy temple near the Mysuru palace.
The organisers said yoga promotes individual health, which in turn contributes to the overall well-being of the society and the nation. Mr. Raghuram Vajpayee of the Okkuta said that there was a need to create greater awareness of practising yoga.
The organisers said that Mysuru is known to be a yoga hub and highlighted how Yoga is a tradition in this region that gained patronisation and became popular due to the Wadiyars of Mysuru. It has drawn luminaries like Krishnamacharya whose disciples including B.K.S. Iyengar, and Pattabhi Jois, among others took it to different parts of the world.
Underlining the significance of mass Surya Namaskara which drew hundreds of yoga practitioners, the organisers said that Ratha Saptami is associated with the Sun God and hence Surya Namaskara also amounts to paying obeisance to the deity. Besides, yoga and Surya Namaskara not only promote one’s health through rejuvenation of body and mind but also strengthen concentration which brings its benefits in daily life, according to the Okkuta members.
