From a dump to green haven near Cooum at Anna Nagar

Escape urban chaos at Kanagam Eco-Park in Anna Nagar, offering green spaces, sports facilities, and wildlife habitats.
What was once a neglected dump, filled with construction debris, has been reshaped into a green space at Anna Nagar. This is the Kanagam Eco-Park. Located near Cooum River and behind VR Mall, it offers a much-needed escape from the urban chaos, while supporting local wildlife and providing a place for residents to unwind.
As Chennai grew over the years, Anna Nagar became a prime example of commercialisation. With high-rises and eateries taking over, the neighbourhood has become much more cramped. The open space reservation (OSR) land, once a forgotten plot, had huge potential to become something much more. And, in 2022, thanks to a little imagination and a lot of efforts, it was reborn as Kanagam Eco-Park.
The Environmentalist Foundation of India (EFI) says the park was created with two main goals: to bring the spirit of sports to the people and to encourage fitness, all the while reconnecting with nature. This project, a joint effort of EFI, the Greater Chennai Corporation, and Hexaware Technologies, turned an abandoned lot into something special. Now, spread across 3.5 acres, the park offers everything from a lush urban forest with native trees to a football ground, a walking track, a children’s play area, and more.
The park’s green space is a welcome contrast to the concrete jungle nearby. The urban forest, now flourishing with local flora, provides a home for birds and small animals. For those looking to stretch their legs, there are football and volleyball courts, along with walking paths that snake through the greenery. There is even a pergola and gazebo where you can sit back and relax. And the kids? They’ve got a play area to burn off all their energy.
Selvi, 55, who lives at Anna Nagar West, says Kanagam Eco-Park has been a game-changer for her. “Back in Salem, I had a huge garden, but moving to the city meant I had no space to walk or enjoy the outdoors,” she says. “Now, I can step outside and get some fresh air whenever I want.”
The park has also become a favourite for the younger crowd. A 13-year-old football fan excitedly shares how easy it is now to play with his friends. “I don’t have to beg my mother to drive me any more. I just walk five minutes and I’m here with my friends.” Whether you’re there for a quick game of football, a peaceful stroll, or a bit of birdwatching, Kanagam Eco-Park has something for everyone.
