A resolution to this effect was passed at the 24th Virudhunagar district conference of the party here on Sunday. A. Gurusamy was elected Virudhunagar district secretary of the party at the conference.
The party passed resolutions with a list of demands. Among the demands was protecting the major industries such as fireworks, printing, matches which, the party said, were facing crisis because of the wrong economic polices of the Centre. The tollgate at Kappalur in Madurai district on Virudhunagar-Madurai highway should be removed. MEMU services should be introduced from Madurai to Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Tiruchendur and Sencottai.
Another resolution wanted Virudhunagar Government Medical College Hospital to have nephrology ward, intensive cardiology ward, treatment for head injury, cancer, brain and neuro treatment and to start B.Sc. Nursing course. The party wanted a hostel to be built for students at Virudhunagar Sports Stadium. High property tax being collected by municipalities should be reduced. No earthmovers should be utilised for works taken up under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Development Scheme. A museum should be set up at Vembakottai.
GST for powerlooms should be scrapped and incentive should be restored for gauze bandage production. Import duty on cotton should be scrapped.
The conference demanded that efforts be made to curb prevent animals from straying into farmlands along the Western Ghats. Families of those who were killed by wild animals should be given a compensation of ₹25 lakh. An electric crematorium should be set up at Allampatti.
The cadres took out a procession from Katcheri Road to Desabandhu Ground where a public meeting was addressed by party leaders, including U. Vasuki, State executive committee member, S. Noor Mohammed, and Madurai MP Su. Venkatesan.
