Medical authorities set up isolation ward at GGH in Nellore district to prepare for potential HMPV outbreak in India.
In the wake of worldwide concerns of Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases, the Medical and Health authorities set up a 10-bed isolation ward at Government General Hospital (GGH) in SPSR Nellore district on Wednesday.
Presently, around 11 HMPV cases have been reported in India, but none in Andhra Pradesh. However, the Directorate of Medical Education (DME), A.P., has advised the district hospitals to be prepared with sufficient number of specialist doctors, beds, medicines and oxygen cylinders.
“Though there has been no cases reported in Nellore so far, we have been asked to stay alert and be ready for mass casualties with necessary healthcare infrastructure. As a part of preparedness to address any potential outbreak of the virus, we have set up this ward,” says GGH Superintendent Dr. B.S. Naik.
“HMPV is not a newly-identified disease and it is not a severe widespread disease as Covid-19. The infection was most prevalent in kids, but there is no need to be panic. Awareness must be created among the school children and local communities through various programmes.”
Speaking to The Hindu, Nellore DEO R. Balaji Rao said, “AP Commissioner of School Education has convened meetings to review the HMPV situation across the State. He issued orders to all staff up to the high school headmaster level in all districts to take preventive steps.”
“Pongal holidays will be announced at all schools from January 10 (Friday). Post festival, we will follow the guidelines issued by the higher authorities. If any symptoms of HMPV will be identified among the children, we will suggest them to use face masks. At present, masks are not mandatory,” he said.
