The State government has cheated the people by hiking the power tariff seven times in three years, causing an additional burden of ₹12,000 crore on the people, Jana Sena Party (JSP) PAC Member Kona Tata Rao has alleged. He was addressing the participants in the dharna, organised by the JSP at the Collectorate here on Friday demanding roll back of the hike.
The JSP leader said that the State government has already borrowed ₹24,000 crore through the Power Corporation. Now, the tariff has been increased exorbitantly to burden the common and middle class consumers. The government was also toying with the idea of imposing an additional burden of ₹3,000 crore in the name of ‘true-up’ charges He said that the JSP would stand by the people till the government withdrew the hike.
JSP general secretary T. Shiva Shankar, general secretary Bolisetty Satya, Sundarapu Vijay Kumar, party leaders P. Usha Kiran, B. Raghu and P.V.S.N. Raju , corporators and district leaders were among those who participated in the dharna.
Meanwhile, TDP workers staged a protest with banners, placards and lanterns at the Gandhi statue, opposite the GVMC, demanding roll back of the hike.
They raised slogans against the State government. MLA Velagapudi Ramakrishna Babu, TDP Parliament district president Palla Srinivasa Rao, party leader Gandi Babji and a large number of women leaders participated in the protest
