CM inaugurates India’s single largest solar cell, module manufacturing unit

TATA Power inaugurates India's largest solar manufacturing unit, creating jobs and boosting solar power efficiency in Tamil Nadu.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin inaugurated the country’s single largest solar cell and module manufacturing unit at the Gangaikondan SIPCOT Industrial Growth Centre on Thursday.
Set up by TATA Power’s solar energy manufacturing arm, with an investment of ₹3,800 crore, the TP Solar Limited’s 4.30-GW photovoltaic cell and module manufacturing unit would provide employment to over 2,000 people, including 1,700 women, from Tirunelveli, Palaymkottai and areas within a 100-km radius.
The facility would produce photovoltaic cells and modules for solar power generating units having an annual capacity of 4 GW. “These products, made with advanced robotic automation, will deliver enhanced efficiency and long-term reliability in solar plants and rooftop projects for residential, commercial and industrial purposes,” an official said.
The unit, which comes with an ultra-modern TOPCon and Mono Perc technology, would also manufacture some of the raw materials for module manufacturing.
Addressing the event through videoconferencing, TATA Sons chairman N. Chandrasekar thanked the Tamil Nadu government for giving the conglomerate an opportunity to employ women from the region. Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, TATA Power, Praveer Sinha thanked the government for facilitating the construction of the factory within a record time of two years.
The Chief Minister also laid the foundation stone for Vikram Solar’s 3-GW solar cell and 6-GW module manufacturing facility at the Gangaikondan SIPCOT Industrial Growth Centre, entailing an investment of ₹2,574 crore. This facility is expected to employ over 2,000 people.
Speaker M. Appavu, Ministers Duraimurugan, K.N. Nehru, Thangam Thennarasu, T.R.B. Raaja, Geetha Jeevan and Anita R. Radhakrishnan; Collector K.P. Karthikeyan; MP C. Robert Bruce; and MLAs Nainar Nagenthiran, Ruby R. Manoharan and M. Abdul Wahab, among others, were present.
