Saamana editorial criticizes PM Modi's response to Trump's outsourcing remarks, warns of economic impact on Indian citizens abroad.
In its Thursday editorial titled ‘President Trump’s Kick to the Stomach – Prime Minister in the Kumbh!’ Saamana, the Shiv Sena (UBT)’s mouthpiece, took a sharp jab at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his muted response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s statements on outsourcing and the potential deportation of Indian nationals.
The editorial expressed alarm over the Indian government’s lack of a robust reaction, especially as these remarks could impact a significant number of Indians. It highlighted that, while serious international issues are unfolding, Prime Minister Modi was seen participating in the Kumbh Mela and taking a holy dip in the Ganges, raising questions about the government’s priorities.
“In a recent address, Trump criticised countries like India for allegedly draining jobs from the United States. The accusations have drawn attention to the core of Modi’s economic policies and India’s role as a global outsourcing hub,” the editorial stated.
Saamana warned of the potential economic and social fallout if large numbers of Indians are forced to return due to restrictive U.S. policies. It urged the government to adopt a more assertive and proactive diplomatic stance to safeguard the interests of Indian citizens abroad.
The editorial also stated the effectiveness of Modi’s flagship initiatives, such as ‘Make in India,’ which aim to reduce India’s reliance on outsourcing. “Trump’s rhetoric suggests these reforms might not suffice in protecting India’s global standing. Additionally, there is concern that other nations could adopt similar protectionist measures, further undermining India’s economic progress and trade positioning,” it argued.
It called on the Indian government to balance domestic engagements with international responsibilities. It emphasised the need for focused efforts to protect the rights and welfare of Indian citizens globally, while ensuring that domestic policies create tangible and equitable benefits for the population.
