Two students killed in road accident on NH in Vellore

Tragic accident involving ITI students at BHEL in Ranipet, Vellore; two run over by lorry, one injured, driver arrested.
Two Industrial Training Institute (ITI) students, who were undergoing apprenticeship at BHEL in Ranipet, were run over by a container lorry at Alamelumangapuram that comes under Vellore Corporation limits on Thursday.
P. Jeeva, 20, of Mel Kavanur village near Katpadi; R. Hariharan, 20, of Pallikonda; and P. Suriya, 20, of Abdullapuram village near Vellore, were travelling from Pallikonda to BHEL in a two-wheeler on the Chennai-Bengaluru highway.
Jeeva, who was riding the two-wheeler, lost control of the vehicle and hit the boom barrier on the stretch. He and Hariharan fell on the carriageway and were run over by a lorry heading from Chennai Port to Bengaluru. Meanwhile, Suriya, who jumped off the vehicle, suffered injuries.
All three were reportedly not wearing helmets. The accident took place around 7.30 a.m.
Passers-by shifted the injured student to Government Medical College and Hospital in Vellore for treatment.
They also informed Sathuvachari police, who rushed to the spot and arrested the lorry driver. He was later lodged at Vellore Central Prison.
A probe is under way.
