Police, MVD squads intensify crackdown on unfit private buses in Kozhikode city

Joint MVD and police inspections target traffic violations in Kozhikode, following a fatal bus accident; strict actions planned.

The Motor Vehicles department and the police have stepped up joint inspections in the city to check traffic violations in accident-prone areas. The action comes in the wake of the recent Arayidathupalam bus accident, which killed a young motorcyclist and injured 50 passengers.

“On Thursday, we suspended the licences of six drivers for reckless overtaking attempts on the Arayidathupalam flyover. Joint inspections with the police will continue to ensure passenger safety,” said Regional Transport Officer (Enforcement) C.S. Santhoshkumar. He added that separate squads were also inspecting the fitness of private buses.

According to MVD officials, action was taken against 30 bus drivers on Wednesday (February 6) alone for violating safety norms, mostly for exceeding city speed limits.

They added that reckless overtaking, lane indiscipline, and excessive honking would be strictly dealt with.

The Traffic police have intensified surveillance of private buses speeding in school zones and restricted areas. The road safety enforcement squad now conducts regular patrols at identified black spots in the city. A proposal has also been submitted for an additional interceptor vehicle.

“Some bus drivers repeatedly violate traffic rules and clash with enforcement squads. Steps are being taken to impose strict action against such offenders,” said a sub-inspector with Kozhikode city traffic.
