The Tiruvarur-Thiruthuraipoondi-Agasthiyampalli broad gauge railway line has been energised following completion of the overhead electrification work.
The 60-km section, which falls under the Tiruchi Railway Division limits, was energised following sanction accorded by the Electrical Inspector to the Government of India (EIG) recently, said railway sources. The Principal Chief Electrical Engineer, Southern Railway, functions as the EIG of the Southern Railway zone.
The Southern Railway Construction Organisation was entrusted with the task of executing the overhead electrification project in the 37-km broad gauge section from Thiruthuraipoondi to Agasthiyampalli via Kariyapattinam, Kuruvappulam, Thopputhurai, Neyvilakku, and Vedaranyam stations and in the Tiruvarur-Thiruthuraipoondi-Pattukottai-Aranthangi-Karaikudi section which is nearly 150 km.
The overhead electrification project took off simultaneously in both sections with the Southern Railway Construction Organisation completing it in the portions from Tiruvarur to Thiruthuraipoondi and from Thiruthuraipoondi-Agasthiyampalli. The Thiruthuraipoondi-Agasthiyampalli section was reopened for rail traffic in April 2023 after the line was upgraded to broad gauge. The electrification project in this stretch was taken up separately.
The sources said a test run of an electric locomotive from Tiruvarur railway junction to Agasthiyampalli via Thiruthuraipoondi was carried out on Saturday. A traction substation has been established at Thiruthuraipoondi as part of the overhead electrification project.
Electrification work is under way in the remaining portion from Thiruthuraipoondi to Karaikudi via Pattukottai and Aranthangi.
This is expected to be completed in March 2026. The nearly 150-km Tiruvarur-Thiruthuraipoondi-Pattukottai-Aranthangi-Karaikudi section will be the last BG stretch to get electrified in Tiruchi Railway Division.

The government integrating Kaveri-2 software adopted by offices of sub-registrars with e-khata software adopted by urban local bodies in a hurry without studying the pros and cons has created many issues for many people in the jurisdiction of Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC). They are not able to register their properties, said D. Vedavyasa Kamath, MLA, Mangaluru City South, on Wednesday.
