‘Savukku’ Shankar remanded in judicial custody

The Principal Special Court for Essential Commodities and Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act Cases in Madurai on Wednesday remanded YouTuber ‘Savukku’ Shankar in judicial custody till December 20 in connection with a ganja case registered by Theni District Police.

Special Court Judge M. Chenkamalaselvan on Tuesday had issued a non-bailable warrant against Shankar after he had failed to appear before the court in connection with the case.
Hours after the non-bailable warrant was issued, Shankar was arrested by the police in Chennai and he was handed over to the Theni police. The Theni police produced him before the Special Court, which posted the matter for hearing on December 20. Shankar has filed a petition seeking bail.
In May, Theni District Police had arrested one Mahendran at Kamudi in Ramanathapuram district, claiming that he had supplied ganja to Shankar and his accomplices, and seized 2.6 kg of ganja from him. Earlier, Palanichettipatti Police had arrested two of Shankar’s accomplices, Ramprabhu and Rajarathinam, and claimed to have seized 500 grams of ganja from their vehicles.
The staff of gram panchayats in Mysuru staged a demonstration outside the zilla panchayat office here on Wednesday in support of their demands, including a minimum wage of ₹31,000 a month and a pension of ₹6,000 to the retired GP staff and also to the families of those who died during their service period.
