Salem New Bus Stand witnesses huge crowd ahead of Pongal festival
Salem New Bus Stand witnessed huge crowd on Sunday as people wanted to board the special buses to reach their hometowns for Pongal festival.
The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) is operating special buses to important cities from the Salem New Bus Stand ahead of the festival. People gathered in large numbers at the bus stand from Saturday evening. The rush was heavy for buses to Tiruvannamalai, Vellore and Chennai.
Officials attached to the TNSTC Salem division said more than 300 special buses were operated from the Salem New Bus Stand to cities such as Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore, Tiruchi, Erode, Tiruppur, Kallakurichi, Villupuram, Tirunelveli, and Puducherry. As Salem was a nodal point to take buses to Bengaluru, Dharmapuri, and Krishnagiri, people reached Salem from nearby districts and boarded the special buses heading to these places. Based on the requirement, additional special buses would be operated, the officials added.
Considering the crowd in the new bus stand and to prevent thefts, police personnel were deployed in and around the bus stand.
