IIT Madras campus rainwater flooding in Velachery, Taramani, Kanagam; residents urge Greater Chennai Corporation for drainage solutions.
The campus of the IIT Madras is surrounded by residential localities in Velachery, Taramani, and Kanagam. The rainwater is let out of the campus through the compound wall along Gandhi Main Road at Velachery, Kanagam, Pallipattu, and Taramani. As a result, several roads are flooded. Taramani, a low-level terrain, is the most affected. The Gandhi Main Road has a storm water drain, but the narrow streets of Taramani and Kanagam suffer from water stagnation for days. The Greater Chennai Corporation should advise the IIT to build a drain.

A Corporation official says the storm water drain on the Velachery Main Road handles the rainwater from the IIT gate at Velachery. A drain is proposed on Thiruvalluvar Salai to prevent flooding of the main road.
Chennai-Thiruvallur High Road links Ambattur, Thirumullaivoyal, Avadi, Pattabhiram, and Thiruninravur to the city. The Highways Department is building a macro drain along the road at Avadi and Pattabhiram. For this project, precast concrete blocks have been placed all along the road, which carries heavy traffic at peak hours. The blocks have narrowed the carriageway, and barricades have been placed on the road margin. The traffic comes to a halt at peak hours. We request the Highways Department and the Avadi Traffic Police to remove the blocks.
